Dancing with the Stars" competitors were jumping to the jitterbug and gliding to the graceful waltz on Monday night's competition show -- and each of the couples also took to the dance floor for a competition mambo! Click here to see the season nine "Dancing with the Stars" scoreboard.
Singer Mya and Dmitry Chaplin boogied to the jitterbug. Head judge Len Goodman took them to task saying, "The last refuge of the untalented is gimmicks and props. You are such a good dancer, it was unnecessary to spend 20 seconds polishing my desk. What you did, you did well. I just wanted more of it." Bruno Tonioli joked, "Cleanliness is next to godliness. What you did was spot on. Your timing was incredible. You were so much in sync." Carrie Ann Inaba agreed with Len, saying, "The jitterbug is where you go wild and crazy. It was under what I expect from you." Mya and Dmitry scored 24 out of 30 points.
Melissa Joan Hart and Mark Ballas were next up with the waltz. Bruno chastised, "That wasn't good for week six. It didn't look like you were dancing. It looked as if you were remembering what you were told. There was no flow to the dance." Carrie Ann added, "Unfortunately, the waltz is supposed to be gliding. It looked as if the floor was sticky. You had a hard time with this dance." Len disagreed, saying, "I thought you looked elegant. You had a good hold. There were some problems with the techniques. I think their critiques were a little bit harsh." They were awarded 20 points.
"Iron Chef" chairman Mark Dacascos and professional partner Lacey Schwimmer performed an energetic jitterbug. Carrie Ann enthused, "I loved it. I am so bummed you did that little stumble at the end. That is the jitterbug. That is the energy I was looking for." Len told them, "Sometimes less is more, but not in the jitterbug. It was full of energy. Great." Bruno raved, "Truly spectacular. You managed to keep up with that crazy kitty. You did lose the timing just at the end." The judges conferred 26 points on the couple.
Pop star Aaron Carter and Karina Smirnoff glided across the ballroom floor with a graceful waltz, which did not go unnoticed by the judges. Len complimented, "You danced with maturity. Your frame was good. It had a great connection between the two of you -- a lot of action and reaction. That was your best dance. I am proud of you." Bruno agreed, saying, "The boy has become a gentleman. It is incredibly hard to lead in these dances. Great musicality, but you stumbled. At this stage in the competition, we have to point it out." Carrie Ann praised them, saying, "It was beautiful. You did lose it just a little bit. An 'A' for effort. I love the new Aaron Carter. You are bringing it to the dance floor." Aaron and Karina scored a 25.
Football champ Michael Irvin and Anna Demidova took to the ballroom floor with a waltz. Bruno commented, "This was a waltz. And you looked like you enjoyed yourself, but it wasn't a premier league waltz. I know everybody likes you, but that was not as good as it should be at this stage." Carrie Ann asked Anna, "Did your feet come off the ground? Truly, I have to say that waltz was so charming. However, I have to dock you for the lift and there was a stumble. It was good and bad." Len disagreed, saying, "It was amazing. And two of [the judges] got it totally wrong. It had a charm about it. It was a gentle waltz. You had the best footwork of any waltz we have seen tonight. It was really, really good." The judges gave them a total of 20 points.
Reality TV star Kelly Osbourne and her professional partner Louis van Amstel were jumping to the jitterbug. Carrie Ann commented, "I think you brought back your sense of fun. Sometimes when you think of the worst, you bring the worst. You missed your black flip. Stay in the happy place." Len said, "I know you have had a bad ankle, so you were probably trying to protect it, but it was a little flatfooted throughout the dance. It needed wildness and a sense of freedom. It was like a blueberry muffin without the blueberries." Bruno told the couple, "It was cute and nice. Now what you have to do is ignite the performance. Come out here and sell it. Become the character. Throw out the fear and allow yourself to perform. Everything was kind of beige." The beige performance earned 20 points.
Snowboarder Louie Vito and his partner Chelsie Hightower proved they could boogie with the best of them as they took to the floor with a jitterbug. Len declared, "Parts of that were fantastic. I love your enthusiasm. You come out and give it 100 percent. Unfortunately in among the great stuff, is some stuff you lose." Bruno joked, "You were wacko which suited this dance, but you lose the precision. You have to work on being precise." Carrie Ann declared, "I loved this dance. I think it suited you. You nailed that, but you dropped your partner twice and that is not acceptable." Louie and Chelise were awarded 21 points.
Model Joanna Krupa was reunited with Derek Hough, who missed last week when he fell ill with the flu, for the romantic waltz. Bruno began the judges' critique, waxing poetic with: "It was like watching a butterfly gentling gliding over an Alpine meadow. Weightless. What a performance!" Carrie Ann was a little less enthusiastic, commenting, "There was something strange about it. The outside of your lines were great, but you had hesitation a lot. I felt as if you were doubting yourself, which is strange, because I think you are a fierce competitor." Len pointed out, "Your footwork wasn't too brilliant, but you went straight into the dance. Good holds. Good posture. Lovely movements. The best waltz we have seen tonight." They scored a 26.
Former teen idol Donny Osmond and Kym Johnson wrapped up the individual performances with a hoppin' jitterbug. Carrie Ann said, "You guys certainly know how to work a room. There was a weird stumble, and you had a few moments of being out of sync." Len stated, "Whatever dance is thrown at you, you do full out. It was really entertaining." Bruno agreed that Donny could definitely work a room, adding, "It was a little bit like a steam engine trying to keep up with a bullet train. It was entertaining." The final score of the night was 24.
Then all nine competitors took to the floor for a competition mambo, during which the judges eliminated the weakest dancers until Joanna and Derek won the competition and 10 additional points. Following in order from second place to the bottom and earning from nine to two points were: Mya & Dmitry, Aaron & Karina, Donny & Kym, Mark & Lacey, Kelly & Louis, Melissa & Mark, Louie & Chelsie and Michael & Anna.
On Tuesday night's results show at 9 p.m. on ABC, the remaining nine couples face their first Dance-Off double elimination as the eighth and ninth couples are eliminated. In a "Dancing with the Stars" first, the couple with the lowest combined scores will be eliminated, while the second and third couple with lowest combined scores will face the judges one last time in a Dance-Off to save their spot in the competition. The two couples will perform a short dance routine of their choosing, and the judges' scores for the Dance-Off routine will determine their fate.
Also, best-selling country artist Taylor Swift will appear on the release date of the Platinum Edition of her Fearless album, to premiere a brand-new single, "Jump, Then Fall," as well as perform her worldwide chart-topping hit, "Love Story." "Dancing with the Stars" airs Mondays and Tuesdays on ABC.
