So You Think You Can Dance 2010 premiered tonight on Fox, and the opening segment is below. Of course the first few weeks of the show are the same as always — nationwide auditions — but after that the new format kicks in and maybe even Paula Abdul will show up as a guest judge!

If you’re confused about the new format, join the club. It kind of sounds like Dancing With the Stars, only without professional dancers, just all-stars from previous seasons.

Nigel Lythgoe took a stab at explaining the new format to reporters on Monday via conference call.

“We are going to put together a pool of ex-So You Think You Can Dance all-stars — some of our favorite dancers from across all six seasons. They will act as a pool of [dance partners for the seventh-season contestants],” he said.

“The competitors will draw — instead of drawing the genre of dance out of the hat — they will draw a photograph of one of the all-stars, and that will dictate the genre of dance that they’re going to be dancing.

Additionally, audience voting won’t count as much, the group that comes out of Las Vegas will be ten instead of 20, and the finale might have four contestants or three…not sure yet. Additionally, Mary Murphy will alternate between being a judge and a choreographer, as will Mia Michaels. Sort of like job sharing.
